Oh, last month I went to the ER because I didn’t feel right. My older sister has had major heart problems this year, so I want taking any chances. Turned out to be nothing, all tests were normal. Got the bill for it today. Whee.

Emergency rooms are only for the rich and destitute, it seems.

I mean, it could have sucked more. Without insurance it would have been $7k. Still, getting sloshed.

I had a $1000 bill for a 45 minute visit to an urgent care office once. Assholes.

Have you considered becoming Canadian? Alcohol is more expensive, but hospital visits are significantly cheaper.

You should return to the Motherland. Over here we have free stabbings and free healthcare.

Aww, man, that sucks. I was in your shoes a couple of months ago, but it turned out I had a broken leg so it was worth it.

On the plus side, I called the hospital when I got the bill and explained that since I couldn’t work because of the broken leg, I couldn’t afford to pay them and they cut the bill down from $2700 to $800.

It’s definitely worth it to call them and ask if they can help you out.

And that’s the kicker, ain’t it? Back in college, I had to go to the ER after slicing my fingertip open with a straight razor in the middle of the night (was cutting mattes for my photo final). Two hours and three stitches later, the bill was around $700. That was with insurance. I’m sure nowadays it would be closer to your $1,100.

But nah, we don’t need healthcare reform in this country. Not at all. Nope.

The good news is that all the tests were negative, but the problem is now I don’t know what the hell it was. I’ve had a few weird incidents over the years, and after having time to look thru the symptoms and everything I think I had all the physiological symptoms of a panic attack without the mental symptoms. And that’s weird.

Went to the two years ago — similar out of pocket expense as well

I can deal with it, it just sucks. I was hoping to get a bit ahead and now it’s not going to happen. Good thing I’ve been forced to work extra the last few weeks, and my tax refund will take care of the rest. We had been hoping to replace the carpet, though.

I considered going to urgent care, but I had a bad feeling they would have sent me to the ER anyway and I would have had two bills. The important thing is that they did an EKG right away and it turned out completely normal. That’s the test they did on my sister where they first found she had a problem.

I really shouldn’t complain so much. Her test probably saved her life and as a bonus she’s lost a lot of weight. I was only in the ER for like 3 hours, and the battery of tests they did all came up good.

Hey what can you do. Better to be broke than potentially dead. That’s the thing about the ER: people like us would never go unless we absolutely felt we should, even if we were wrong, we’re not doctors.

Or at least a colonial country (ie Canada, Australia, etc...), I believe most of them have universal healthcare and speak English.

Or something could have been wrong, which would have been a whole new world of suck.

Still, nothing like an $1100 shot to the pocket when you weren’t planning for it. Drink up!

A friend and co-worker of mine went to the ER back on the 22nd of Feb, and he’s still paying off the $1,500 deductible that our health insurance plan requires. All that for a little insulin and some IV fluids. And I got into a bit of trouble for that incident. It occurred on a Sunday night, and I stayed at the hospital until it was determined whether they were going to admit or release him. As a result, I didn’t get home until after 4:30AM.

I called into the office and left a voicemail for the front desk saying that I wasn’t coming in because I had just gotten home. Well, that message didn’t get relayed to my boss, who is two time zones away. I missed some important (yeah, right) meeting and was given a written reprimand. Bastards. Between the near-worthless insurance plan, (which I’m pretty sure the corner offices don’t have) and the lack of concern for taking care of a seriously ill friend/co-worker, they can all go to hell.

I have an irregular heartbeat, it comes from my father’s side of the family.

Twice now it has cost me money when doctors freak out. Just lucky I guess.

My oxygen level was 1 away from being sent to hospital. Luckily it was one away, so I got a steroid shot and I was on my way... To drive a thousand miles.

Both my dad and I have a hearth thing and they couldn't pin it down until they managed to catch it during an episode, my dad wore a monitor for weeks hoping to catch it. It sucks chasing something that's hiding.

Looking back on what happened, I didn’t have any chest pain and my heart wasn’t racing or anything like that. I felt some pressure around my sternum, though. Fortunately that went away and hasn’t come back.

I’m still making it a goal this year to drop weight and get in shape. I miss working out.
